ไทยออแพร์คลับ มีความยินดี และ ภูมิใจขอประกาศรายชื่อ ออแพร์ ที่ได้รับรางวัล ออแพร์ไทย แห่งปี 2008

 

ออแพร์ไทยแห่งปี 2008 คือ นางสาว กุสุมา ธาราธิคุณเดช หรือ โฮสต์เรียกเธอว่า Kath ค่ะ

กุสุมาเป็นออแพร์รัฐคาโลไรน่า ดูแลเด็กทั้งหมด 4 คนมีทั้งเด็กฝาแฝด และก็เด็กที่มีพัฒนาการช้า 
กุสุมาใช้ชีวิตออแพร์อย่างคุ้มค่า ธัญญ่าขอแสดงความดีใจกับ กุสุมา ในความอุตสาหะ และความตั้งใจดีต่อโครงการออแพร์ค่ะ 

 

จดหมายจากโฮสต์

We think the world of our au pair, Kasuma or Kath as we know her.  She came to us as a transition candidate after being an au pair for another family for ten months.  She came as a temporary au pair while our agency was to continue looking for another au pair for us.  Within days we saw how she connected with our children, that she was truly kind and loving and how she had very quickly become a part of our family.  She joined us during the busy holiday season and embraced celebrating Hanukkah and Christmas and learning more about our family, our culture and our traditions.  Within days we knew she was a wonderful fit for our family and we asked her to consider extending her visa and staying with us as long as possible.  She agreed to stay for nine months and so she will be with us through November.  Kath is our third au pair and as the saying goes, “the third time was the charm”.

She is a kind and gentle care giver, patient and nurturing with the children.  She is even-tempered and can multitask easily taking care of four children under the age of five as well as a parent could.  She is fun-loving, good-spirited, funny and a pleasure to be around.  She takes the children everywhere from the park to the pool, to museums and the mall and takes the initiative to coordinate play dates and other outings for the children.  She is mature and responsible and we trust her completely with our precious children.  Which is really saying a great deal as we never had this same level of trust with either of our previous au pairs. 

Both my husband and I work full-time jobs and we, like any family with young children stay very busy with activities for all of the kids.  Kath has helped us manage our busy and hectic lives and our ability to rely and depend on her has been a big part of our overall family happiness and well-being.

Kath has adapted well to American culture and has taken advantage of learning as much as possible while here.  She completed the entire English as a Second Language series of classes at our local college and went on to take additional classes to explore some of her hobbies and interests.  One of these classes was a photography class and from this she took some wonderful pictures of the children which she shared with my husband in the form of a beautiful, light-hearted and fun collage of the children.  It could not have been a more thoughtful gift.

She has a wonderful group of friends including a number of other Thai au pairs in the area as well as girls from her local au pair group and people she has met through her classes.  Kath has a well-balanced social life and as such her sense of calm and balance is exhibited in her pleasant and even-tempered demeanor each day.

One of our children, Lance has sensory processing disorder, a neurological condition associated with his premature birth.  Kath never becomes flustered by his behavior which can often be very challenging, especially when you are also caring for three other children.  In fact, she has been one of the keys in providing a consistent and nurturing environment to help Lance get through many of his issues and challenges this past year.  She sits in on his occupational therapy sessions and works on the recommended follow up activities during the week.  As such, Lance has made great progress in becoming better able to deal with sensory input this past year. 

Kath has shared with us parts of her culture and tradition.  She cooks and makes crafts that are traditional Thai.  She has even helped our infant transition to solid food by introducing her to traditional Thai dishes for babies such as rice soup and other rice dishes (which by the way, Sophia loves).

We truly feel blessed to have had Kath with us during this year and we are sad that she is going to have to leave us.  However, we know that she has been away from her family and friends for a very long time now and it would be unfair of us to keep her away from them any longer.  We will miss her tremendously and feel that she has been a real part of our family this past year.  We love how she has enriched each of us.  Our lives will never be the same and she will always be part of family even if she is half a world away. 

There could no better ambassador for the au pair program than Kath.  She epitomizes everything a wonderful au pair should be.  I certainly hope that you will consider her for this prestigious award.  In my mind there is no one more deserving of the honor.

Thai Au Pair of the year 2008

          หลังจากที่ครอบครัวแรก ขอออกจากโครงการออแพร์ ขณะนั้นฉันเหลือเวลาก่อนจบโครงการเพียง  6 สัปดาห์เท่านั้น  ครอบครัว Mollick ได้ติดต่อเข้ามาและให้โอกาสฉันมาเป็นออแพร์ของพวกเขา และได้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของครอบครัวอย่างแท้จริง

ทำไมถึงควรได้รับตำแหน่งออแพร์ไทยแห่งปี? คงตอบไม่ได้ว่าทำไม แต่ฉันมีหลายร้อยเหตุผลหลายร้อยเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับชีวิตการเป็นออแพร์ของฉัน อยากให้คุณตัดสินจากสิ่งที่ฉันทำ และ สิ่งที่ฉันเป็น  ตั้งแต่เข้าร่วมโครงการ จนถึงปัจจุบัน เหตุผลที่ดีที่สุด..เพราะฉันทุ่มเท และ รักในสิ่งที่ทำ ฉันไม่ได้เป็นเพียงแค่พี่เลี้ยงเด็กระหว่างวัน 45 ชม.ต่อสัปดาห์ แต่ฉันเป็น “ตั้งออแพร์” เป็น “พ่อเเม่จำเป็น”  เป็น “เพื่อน” และ เป็น “พี่” ให้กับเด็กๆทั้ง 4 คน Max , Audrey , Lance และ Sophia ทั้งในเวลางานและนอกเวลางานด้วย สำหรับฉัน...ความสุขของน้องก็คือความสุขของฉันด้วย ซึ่งมันมาพร้อมกับหน้าที่และ ความรับผิดชอบ และต้องยอมรับว่าเด็กๆทั้ง 4 คน แตกต่างกัน มีความชอบต่างกัน กินต่างกัน สนใจต่างกัน ความรับผิดชอบก็มากตามไปด้วย ระหว่างวัน ฉันกับเด็กๆทั้ง 4 คนไปด้วยกันทุกที่ ตั้งแต่ สวนสาธารณะ ,ไปปิกนิก ,สนามเด็กเล่น, สระว่ายน้ำ, ห้างสรรพสินค้า, พิพิธภัณฑ์ ,สวนสัตว์ ,ห้องสมุด, สวนสนุก และเป็นคนจัดตารางการนัดเล่นกับเพื่อนๆ(Play date) ให้เด็กๆได้รู้จักคนอื่นๆและรู้จักการเข้าสังคมด้วย เวลาอยู่บ้านก็จะมีการทำกิจกรรมตลอด ทั้งเล่นในบ้านและนอกบ้าน ทั้งหน้าบ้าน หลังบ้าน ข้างบ้าน และ เดินทางไกลแถวๆบ้าน ถีบจักรยาน จับปลาน้อยริมลำธาร เล่นปืนฉีดน้ำ สระว่ายน้ำยาง บอลลูนน้ำ ประดิษฐ์สิ่งของจากของเหลือใช้ พับกระดาษ เล่น Play Doh(ดินน้ำมัน) วาดรูป ระบายสี เป่าสี พับสี ร้องเพลง เต้นรำ เล่นบทบาทสมมติเป็น เจ้าหญิง เจ้าชาย หมา แมว ลิง ตามแต่เด็กอยากจะให้เป็น ไปจนถึง สอนสะกดคำ อ่านหนังสือ อ่านนิทาน และดูหนังดูทีวีด้วยกัน โดยทุกวันฉันจะจัดกิจกรรมให้เด็กๆได้ทำ.. ฉันเชื่อว่า “ทุกอย่างที่ได้ทำ ทุกที่ที่ได้ไป เด็กๆได้เรียนรู้จากสิ่งที่เค้าพบ และมีพัฒนาการจากสิ่งที่เค้าได้พบ ได้เห็น และได้ทำอย่างแน่นอน!!” หนึ่งในเด็กที่ฉันดูแล คือ Lance ซึ่งเป็น sensory processing disorder เนื่องจากคลอดก่อนกำหนด เค้าจะเรียนรู้ช้า พูดช้า เข้าใจอะไรค่อนข้างยาก เสียใจง่าย ดีใจง่าย ทำทุกอย่างตามอารมณ์ ตลอดเวลา ตอนที่ฉันเข้าบ้านใหม่ๆ Lance พูดได้แค่ไม่กี่คำ ฉันจึงต้องพูดกับ Lance ช้าๆ สอนให้พูด สอนให้ใจเย็น และกอดเยอะๆ นอกจากนี้ฉันได้เข้าร่วมห้องบำบัดกับ Lance ด้วย ในแต่ละสัปดาห์นักบำบัดจะดูพัฒนาการ ทั้งทางร่างกาย จิตใจ และอารมณ์ของ Lance ว่าเปลียนไปเพียงไร ฉันรู้สึกถึงภาระหน้าที่ที่เพิ่มขึ้นอีก เพราะเท่ากับว่า พัฒนาการของน้อง ขึ้นอยู่กับการดูแลเอาใจใส่ของฉันมากกว่าเดิม ว่าทำอย่างไรจึงจะช่วยให้ Lance มีพัฒนาการเทียบเท่าเด็กในวัยเดียวกัน โดยที่ไม่ลืมว่าต้องดูแลเด็กอีก 3 คนไปพร้อมๆกันด้วย นอกจากหน้าที่ในฐานะออแพร์ ฉันยังได้มีโอกาสเรียนรู้สิ่งต่างๆผ่านการเรียน มากกว่า 6 หน่อยกิต ที่โครงการกำหนด ฉันได้มีโอกาสเรียนในสิ่งที่ฉันสนใจ ได้แก่ English as a second language ,Wedding consultant business , Photography ,   Writing essays and Grammar review , Business writing for results เป็นต้น จากการเรียน ทำให้ฉันพบปะเพื่อนใหม่ ได้รู้จักเพื่อนจากนานาประเทศ ทั้งที่เป็นคนอเมริกัน และไม่ใช่อเมริกัน ได้เรียนรู้ถึงวัฒนธรรมที่แตกต่างกัน ความคิดและทัศนคติที่ต่างกัน และเพื่อนที่ฉันรู้จักไม่ได้เป็นเพียงจำนวนเพื่อนที่รู้จัก แต่เป็นเพื่อนที่จริงใจ ช่วยเหลือ แบ่งปันความสุขและความทุกข์ร่วมกัน และเมื่อถึงวันหยุด ฉันก็ไม่ลืมที่จะหาโอกาสท่องเที่ยวหาประสบการณ์ได้มีโอกาสไปยังที่ต่างๆ ได้แก่ Toronto(Canada) , New York city (NY), Philadelphia(PA), Boston(MA), New Hampshire ,  Orlando(FL), Atlantic City(NJ), Ocean City(NJ) , Baltimore(MD), Annapolis(MD), Washington D.C. ,Virginia , Delaware  และ เที่ยวใน North Carolina ได้เห็นส่วนต่างๆของอเมริกา ได้พบปะผู้คนผ่านการท่องเที่ยว ได้เรียนรู้อเมริกา และได้ยินสำเนียงที่แตกต่างกันอีกด้วย

โดยบุคลิกส่วนตัว ฉันเป็นคนเปิดเผย จริงใจและมีมนุษยสัมพันธ์ดี เข้ากับคนอื่นง่าย ตลก ยืดหยุ่น ปรับตัวและยอมรับสิ่งใหม่ๆได้เร็ว กล้าที่จะเรียนรู้สิ่งใหม่ๆ ทั้งกับงานในหน้าที่ การใช้ชีวิตกับครอบครัวชาวอเมริกัน รวมไปถึงการใช้ชีวิตส่วนตัว!!

การได้มาเป็นออแพร์ สำหรับฉันเป็นประสบการณ์ล้ำค่า ไม่ใช่แค่ภาษาที่พัฒนา  แต่มีความรับผิดชอบและรู้จักตัวเองมากขึ้น และมีความเป็นผู้ใหญ่มากขึ้นด้วย ฉันได้รู้จักผู้คนใหม่ๆ ได้ไปที่ต่างๆ ได้มิตรภาพดีๆจากเพื่อน ได้ “ รัก ” เด็กๆ และครอบครัวอุปถัมภ์ ได้แสดงให้ ให้ชาวต่างชาติเห็นเห็นถึงความเป็นไทย ว่าคนไทยไม่ได้มีแค่อาหารอร่อย แต่เรายังมีวัฒนธรรมและประเพณีที่ดีด้วย มีบ้างที่ชีวิตตกหลุมอากาศ มีเรื่องไม่ดีเกิดขึ้น แต่ความผิดพลาดเหล่านั้นก็เป็นบทเรียนสอนให้ฉันโตขึ้นอีกก้าวหนึ่ง ระยะเวลาในการใช้ชีวิตในฐานะการเป็นออแพร์ของฉันเหลือเพียงไม่กี่เดือน แต่สิ่งที่ฉันอยากจะบอกในฐานะที่เป็นหนึ่งในผู้เข้ารอบไทยออแพร์แห่งปี คือ การได้มามีโอกาสใช้ชีวิตร่วมกับครอบครัวชาวอเมริกันจะเป็นความทรงจำที่ดีตลอดไป...
